Safety

Safety policies in Ocee Park's Baseball and Softball leagues involve:

  • General child safety rules
  • Cold and inclement weather (including lighnting) rules and guidelines
  • Equipment safety rules and guidelines

1. Child Safety Rules

OPAA has adopted the City of Johns Creek Recreation & Parks Division's child safety rules  to protect the children and adults that participate in our programs.

  • Rule #1 Two-Person Rule Those working with children and youth in organized activities shall observe the "two-person rule" and/or the "open view rule" at all times. The "two-person rule" requires that employees, volunteers, and supervisors should avoid situations where one worker is alone with children or youth without a partner. If the two-person rule is not feasible or practical, then the "open view rule" must be observed. The "open view rule" requires the interior of the occupied room to be visible to outside observers. An open door, a split door with one half open or an observation window or opening meets the requirements of the "open view rule". When a child in sixth grade or under needs to use the restroom, one adult will check out the restroom before the child enters. The adult will wait outside the restroom to escort the child back to the room.
  • Rule #2 Physical Contact Discretion is necessary in regards to physical contact with children. Hugs, handshakes, high fives, and pats on the arm or shoulder are acceptable. OPAA will not permit or sanction corporal punishment of any kind by its staff and volunteers. No one should ever use one-on-one physical force on a child by spanking, swatting, grabbing or shaking as a means of discipline. Adults are not allowed to yell or scream in anger, or threaten a child through bodily motions that may scare them.
  • Rule #3 Reporting Abuse If you suspect that a child is a victim of abuse is, by law, you are required to notify your supervisor.
  • Rule #4 Transportation of Children Volunteers and staff members are discouraged from transporting children in their personal vehicles. If transporting children is necessary, it should be done by two adults.
  • Rule #5 Overnight Activities Overnight team "sleep-overs" are discouraged.
  • Rule #6 Off-premise Activities Two or more prepared staff or volunteers are required at all off-premise activities with children.
  • Rule #7 Drugs & Alcohol All spectators, participants, volunteers and staff shall refrain from the use of alcohol, illegal drugs and tobacco during all City-sponsored activities. No alcohol may be served at league-related events such as team parties.

2. Inclement Weather Rules and Guidelines

The OPAA Board of Directors understands everyone's desire to practice and play games in marginal weather, especially since warm, non-rainy days can be few and far between in early spring and late fall.  However, our prime directive as the governing Board is to protect the well-being of theplayers, coaches, and parents of our great organization. Our desire is to have your children playing baseball, softball and sports for many years to come, and we are very concerned about cold weather and the effect it has on the health and well being of the children, especially on their throwing arms. We have solicited opinions from medical and sports medicine experts, and they have been unanimous in their support of setting cold weather temperature limits for young players in order to protect their health. Just as importantly, we want the players and families to enjoy themselves when the boys and girls are playing at OPAA ... and frankly, it's very difficult to enjoy yourself if you're shivering and can't feel your toes.

Therefore, the OPAA Cold Weather Policy is

Weeknights - if the official Johns Creek, Ga. temperature (zip code 30022), as measured by www.Weather.com, is 40 Degrees OR LESS at 4:30pm, All Practices, and Games, will be cancelled. In addition, if the forecasted temperature is at or below 40 degrees during the scheduled event, it will be terminated at the time the temperature drops to 40 degrees. This applies to all leagues and teams at Ocee Park.

Weekend mornings - if the official Johns Creek, Ga. temperature (30022), as measured or forecast by www.Weather.com is 40 Degrees OR LESS at Practice or Game Time, those Practices or Games will be cancelled or delayed until the temperature is 40 degrees or higher. This applies to all leagues and teams.

Weekend afternoons - if the official Johns Creek, Ga. (30022) temperature, as measured or forecast by www.Weather.com is 40 Degrees OR LESS at the start of Practice or Game Time, those Practices or Games will be cancelled. If the forecasted temperature is at or below 40 degrees during the scheduled event, it will be terminated at the time the temperature drops to 40 degrees. This applies to all leagues and teams.

We also urge the coaches and parents to take into consideration other factors, including wind chill, in making appropriate decisions in cancelling team events for the safety of our players. Managers and coaches that disregard this policy will be subject to immediate disciplinary action, including suspension or expulsion by the OPAA Board of Directors.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Our OPAA website includes a link to the Official Temperature (as provided by www.Weather.com). We ask everyone for their cooperation as we strive to make Ocee Park a fun and safe park for our children and families.
